For me, some weeks are busier than others. This week is definitely one of them.
This week I have all my weekly tasks, plus my team and I have to make final changes to my book and make sure it’s perfect (or almost perfect because striving for perfection makes me crazy) by Friday so that we can send it to printer to get copies printed to sell.
It’s weeks like these where I find it hard to balance work and self-care….There’s things that need to be done! I can’t possibly take time to do anything for myself!
But I’ve learned something…Taking care of yourself is something that needs to be done too! It’s just as important.
Yes, the book NEEDS to be done by Friday. However, if I don’t take care of myself and don’t give myself a chance to step away from the computer and breathe, I might not mentally make it to Friday…and I miss my deadline, which means my books won’t get here in time…And what good will that do?
So, I learned a trick from a friend of mine, YouTuber Kati Morton, which is to block out time in your schedule for your favourite self-care activity and tell yourself that it’s not movable or negotiable.
She added, “It’s really important that I recognize what helps me keep doing what I do and I need to make time for that just as much as I need to make time for the doing of things…And if I don’t make time for the yoga, the walks and the therapy appointments, I can’t keep doing what I do.”
So, we both agree on that.
We also both agree that sometimes we wish we were robots so we could just continue working and get shit done. But we aren’t, so I’m going to take Kati’s advice and you should too!
If you don’t know who Kati Morton is, she is a licensed therapist and YouTuber who makes videos about all things mental health, check her out here.
