She’s Hilarious, Inspiring and Relentless… She’s Melanie Crawford.

Melanie Crawford is a motivational comedian from Brantford, Ontario. She’s also a mom of four and a brain injury survivor.

I first met Melanie when she performed at my friend’s variety show. After her set, I remember thinking, “Oh my god… We’re so much alike.” I remember relating so much to what she talked about. We both swear a lot, we both use comedy as a way to accept and express our struggles, and both of our brains are a little more messed up than everyone else’s.

She’s also performing at my book release party on June 22. When I asked if she could produce family-friendly content, she replied with, “It’s hard to believe, but yes.” Yes, it is hard to believe. I’m not sure what to expect, but I know that it’ll be good.

In 1996, Melanie survived a highway accident that caused a traumatic brain injury. It affected the frontal lobe, which is the part of the brain that controls personality, characteristics and movement. The next year, she found hope on stage performing comedy – and she’s been at it ever since.

Before her injury, she was successful in her job as a motivational workshop facilitator and soft skills developer. However, after her accident and her time spent in Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy, she decided that she “wanted to reach people at a grassroots level,” instead of a corporate level – which is something else that I can relate to.

Now, she brands herself a Motivational Comedy Specialist. She explains, “Motivational Comedy is more than just a punchline. It’s the kind of comedy that will not only make you laugh, but also playfully poke at your personal paradigms. Thought-provokingly hilarious. That’s my Motivational Comedy.”

She has a new stand-up motivational comedy show called The EX-Files, which she stars in with her ex-husband, who also has a brain injury. Currently touring in Southern Ontario, it’s filled with stories about co-parenting in a unique way that works! I look forward to seeing it, as I’ve heard it’s hilarious and inspiring.
